Give Cleveland a Madewell or a Calypso or a Uniqlo -- Kim Crow .
On Sunday, my colleague Michelle Jarboe ran a great story thatwrapped up the downtown developments in the works that will mixnational retailers among locally owned shops(www.cleveland.com/business). In the past, I've weighed in on stores I'd love to see in NortheastOhio, but retail is a fluid thing -- there's always a new store tocovet. Here are a few I visited recently in New York City: Madewell: A nascent launch by the folks at J. Crew, this casual women'sretailer offers well-made basics with vintage details. Its pricingis gentler than J. Crew's, and I nabbed one of the dozens ofscarves on display (from $20 to $50), a garment-dyed T-shirt ($38)and a long, summer-weight cardigan with Garment Buttons ($58). Alsoon hand were great-fitting jeans, in several denim washes, as wellas a wide choice of colors. As someone who refuses to bare her armsfor the benefit of the nation, I was pleased to find cardigans inat least four fabric weights and cuts and nearly a dozen colors.Check out a few looks at www.madewell1937.com. Space.NK: A more edited, refined take on the Sephora and Ulta chains, thisBritish import has only a handful of U.S. stores. Concentratingmore on skin care than cosmetics, the airy, elegant Space.NK offersupscale lines such as Dr. Brandt, Caudalie and Jurlique. I pickedup some goodies ($11 and up) by hair guru Nick Arrojo (from TLC's"What Not to Wear") and Space.NK's own line of heavenly scentedbody balms ($30). www.spacenk.com. Calypso: Not a week goes by in the spring and summer without me hearing froma frantic reader who has a wedding to attend and nothing to wear.Calypso has what they're looking for. The small international chainstores offer breezy, unabashedly romantic looks ($60 and up)designed by its French-born owner, Christiane Celle, who alsostocks pieces collected in India, Morocco and other exotic locales. The look is arty but approachable, special but not overwhelming, and her color sense is divine. Girl Next Door in Rocky River hascarried a few Calypso dresses this spring, and co-owner Lisa Pikulreports they've flown out of the store. Check it out atwww.calypso-celle.com. Uniqlo: This Japanese import offers colorful basics for men and women withlow prices and a maximum amount of fun. Think of it as Old Navy'shipster cousin, with well-cut anoraks for $69 and rainbow-coloredT-shirts for $12 and up. Working girls and boys will find plenty ofoffice-appropriate wear -- the season's It accessory, lightweightscarves, can be had in lightweight cashmere ($49) and cheerfulprints ($19.50).
