On the StoreFront: Clarks
canvas boots Clarks has been making shoes known for their comfort since 1825, so when Oscar Santiago, manager of the new store in the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley, says his store is a destination, he knows whereof he speaks. They still make the classic desert boots and wallabees, but the Center Valley store holds several surprises that are both fashion-forward and socially conscious. The store in four words: These comfy shoes rock.First impression: Cleanly designed, the store looks like a stylized factory floor. It says quality.A great gift for someone hard to shop for: Three pairs of striped bamboo cotton sneaker socks for $15.Who shops here: All the baby boomers who wore desert boots in the '60s. And anybody who wants well-made comfortable shoes.Great finds: Canvas man purse in three sizes starting at $89.99.I really loved this: Women's flip-flops with uppers made of fabric so soft I thought it was velvet. In soft summer colors, $59.99.Most expensive item: A woman's black leather laptop bag or purse for $250.Least expensive item: Women's toe socks, $4 a pair.I'd go back for: The summer sandals in just about every color and many styles. The thing that sets them apart is they really offer some support to your feet.I've never seen this before: The new Unstructured line for men and women. They're incredibly light and have little holes along the sides that expel hot air from your feet while you're walking. Women's styles come in everything from a full shoe to a skimpy-yet-substantial sandal. This really impressed me: One of the company's lines -- Soul of Africa -- teaches South African women to make the shoes. Profits from their sale fund orphanages for AIDS orphans. The sales staff was: Absolutely great. They knew a lot, especially for only being there a short time.
